Shepherd's Pie Recipe (British Traditional Dish)


  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups mixed frozen vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground lamb or beef until cooked through.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  • Add the mixed frozen vegetables, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir everything together and cook for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
  • Spread the meat mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, using a spatula to smooth it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes.
  • Bake the shepherd's pie for 25-30 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Let the shepherd's pie cool for a few minutes before serving.
